Next Stop…Cochin

Day 25 – Saturday, November 5th, 2011….at sea

Today was date day! We had gorgeous 30 degree weather at sea.  We spent the morning at the gym then the pool.  We had ice cream sandwiches and then enjoyed pizza at the pizzeria!  I could get use to life on the ship.

Day 26 – Sunday, November 6th, 2011 – Cochin, India

The port at Cochin was very small and industrialized.  The sky was clear and temperatures were already up to mid 30s.  Cochin was a lot more tropical looking then Mumbai.  There were lots of palm trees and greenery.   Cochin looked like it was a fishing village.  Large fishing nets lined the port.

A storm rolled in just as we were heading to dinner.  We had a splurge night and enjoyed a Boston cream pie and chocolate brownie.

Day 27, 28, 29 & 30 – At Sea

Our days at sea all seem to follow the same patterns.  It’s going to be hard to go back to “real life” with schedules.  Every day we spent at sea we were fortunate enough to see flying fish and dolphins beside the boat!

While we were out on our balcony we saw 20+ dolphins swim beside the ship.  I ran into the room, grabbed my camera and was able to capture them swimming beside us on video.

A Missed Opportunity in Mumbai

Day 24 – Friday, November 4th, 2011

We didn’t book anything through the ship for this stop and we we’re extremely disappointed in our decision.  We left and started walking out onto the port and were stopped by a line full of cab drivers and police officers.  We hoped to just wander around the city today but we were quickly informed that we couldn’t leave without taking a cab ride.

At first they tried to overcharge us for a “tour of the city”.  When we told them we just wanted to go to the gate if India, they got extremely rude and brash.

Finally, their prices did come down, however not by a lot.  It was difficult to see all of the horrible living conditions.  We passed by many tin houses and children wandering around with no shirts or shoes on.  We were already warned by the ship to not give any money or food.  That was the hardest part of this stop.

The traffic was unbelievable, yet the driver managed to weave through all of the traffic.  On our way to the Gate of India, the driver stopped at a local shop.  We informed the driver we didn’t want to purchase any souvenirs and he got extremely irate with us.   To stop his yelling we walked into the shop and purchased the first two scarves we saw.

After being treated so aggressively we decided we were ready to head back to the ship.  We were able to see the Gate of India on our way back.  Next time we return we’re definitely going to do a guided tour as there was so much more I wish we could have experienced at this port.

From Oman to Mumbai

Day 21 – Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

We had nothing booked or scheduled for our stop in Oman… Partly because we weren’t set to arrive until about 1pm.  It was a bit cloudier when we arrived but the temperatures were still soaring around 30 degrees.

Oman was beautiful.  The pristine clear water enveloped the harbour and different shops and cafés lined the city streets.  The people of Oman were very friendly as well.  We weren’t approached to buy anything or for money.  We chatted with the locals and enjoyed some private time together.

We wandered through the winding cobblestone streets through a local souk.  The aromatic scents of spices filled the air.  The walkway was dimly lit but we managed to wind through the pathway.  We purchased two silk pashminas and some jewelry.

After wandering around for the day we headed back tot the ship to get ready for the evening.  Oman was it up with beautiful colours and lights.   Another beautiful city that we were extremely fortunate to visit.

We had an Arabian themed night filled with delicious foods and interesting wardrobe choices from the guests on board.  It’s never a full moment!

The  clocks went forward one more hour as we prepared to head to India.  Now we’re 9 hours ahead of the time at home.

At sea!

Day 22 – November 2nd, 2011

Since it was a bit too breezy to sit out on our deck today we ended up going to the gym then wandering around the ship.  We spent the day reading and relaxing.   We didn’t feel like attending the formal dinner so we ordered peanut butter sandwiches to the room!

Day 23 – November 3rd, 2011

Today the temperature stayed around 32 degrees all day.  The sun didn’t leave the sky.  There’s something so relaxing about being in the middle of the ocean with nothing in sight.  Shawn and I have settled into a nice routine while we’re at sea.  We try and make it to the gym and then relax around the upper deck or our balcony.  We’re trying to rest up today as tomorrow we’ll be in Mumbai!

Halloween in Dubai

Day 20 – Monday, October 31st, 2011
Dubai

Today was one of the warmest days we’ve had all trip. 36 degrees! It’s difficult to find clothing that will cover us while still keeping us cool. The terminal in Dubai was very modern and beautiful. One of the first terminals to offer free WIFI too.

First stop on our tour was at the Mall of Emirates. This was one of the most extravagant malls we have ever been to. The mall had valet parking and the parking lot was full of luxury cars.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/b96/69112737/files/2014/12/img_0240.jpg

The city streets were very clean. There wasn’t much to see from a landscape perspective as the land was very bare. However, there were many high rise glass buildings.

Dubai was definitely the most modern place we have stopped so far. We wandered the mall and did a lot of window shopping. We stopped by to see the indoor ski hill. It was funny to see them selling ski wear and gloves, the temperatures even inside the skiing area were still pretty warm. Very different then the temperatures we get in Canada!

After our stop at the Mall of Emirates we went to the Burj Kalifa. The Burj Kalifa is currently the tallest structure in the world. They started building the Burj in 2004 and didn’t finish it until 2010.

The entire structure was covered in glass. When we entered the base of the building we saw a directors chair and Tom Cruise’s name along another chair. They had just finished filming a part of Mission Impossible at the Burj.

The base of the building was intended to look like a flower. The structure was beautiful. We were ushered in to the elevator with about 15 other people. The elevator was covered in black glass. We travelled up to the 124th floor. The elevator was so fast. We wandered around the outdoor patio to take in the breathtaking views from the lookout point.

After leaving the Burj, we toured a Mosque. The grounds were landscaped to perfection. It was very peaceful.

6 Days at Sea – En Route to Dubai

Day 14 – Tuesday, October 25th, 2011
At Sea (Day 1)

The day hovered around 31 degrees. The weather has been unbelievable, we’ve been extremely fortunate. Since we had a full week at sea we ended up going to the gym. While we were at the gym we saw that we just missed an earthquake in Turkey. So far, we’ve been very lucky to miss the demonstrations and strikes in Athens and to miss this earthquake. We decided that today would be a relaxing day at sea. Time to enjoy this beautiful weather on our balcony.

After the gym we grabbed breakfast then headed to our room and made up a batch of sangria from the wine we bought in Capri, Italy. Sitting on the deck we enjoyed a glass of sangria and watched the beautiful water.

Even though we weren’t doing any planned activities or sight seeing today, it still was one of the highlights from our trip. While enjoying the view from our balcony we saw a school of dolphins swimming by. There were about 10-15 dolphins directly below our balcony. They swam alongside the boat for a while. Luckily, we were able to catch them swimming beside the boat on my camera. The video doesn’t do it justice but it was an amazing thing to see.

Day 15 – Wednesday, October 26th, 2011
At Sea (Day 2)

Another day at sea meant it was time to start another book. Onto book #3. We ended up relaxing at the pool for the day, enjoyed some drinks and our books. We didn’t head back to our balcony until around 3pm. 15 days into this trip and we finally made it to our first show on the boat. The performance was great but a little bit cheesy.

Day 16 – Thursday, October 27th, 2011 + Day 17 – Friday, October 28th
At Sea (Day 3 & 4)

For the third day in a row we’re enjoying temperatures hovering around 32 degrees and lots of sunshine. Another day spent by the pool. I’ve never felt so relaxed in my life. We ended up caving and purchased some internet from the cruise line today. We were able to call our parents and send a few emails so it was well worth it. It makes it easier to be away for so long when we’re able to stay in touch with everyone back home.

Day 18 – Saturday, October 29th, 2011 + Day 19 – Sunday, October 30th
At Sea (Day 5 & 6)

We’re starting to feel a little stir crazy being cooped up on the ship. With the weather being a little off today, we decided to relax and watch movies in our room. The waves were high today and the water was choppy. Thankfully, all of our time at sea wasn’t like this.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/b96/69112737/files/2014/12/img_0218.jpg

Yesterday seemed to be the random one off day temperature wise, as today already started off in the low 30’s. We spent the day on our balcony again, enjoying the view, our books and a few games of crib.

We ended up going for our first game of Bingo today. It was a riot. After being two numbers off from the $1000 jackpot we decided it was time to call it a night. We had a big day ahead of us tomorrow since we were arriving in Dubai shortly.
